Methods and Materials for Teaching Children's and Adolescent Literature

This course forced me to evaluate books in new ways. We dicussed and evaluated the importance of picking good literature for our students. We deeply studied the authenticity of books, specifically when we studied books on the Abenaki culture. This course taught me the importance of careful book selection for my classes. It also taught me about using books that depict cultures appropriately and accurately.

This course focused on various learning perspectives. We also learned about integrating several technologies into our teaching as well as altering our teaching styles to best fit our learners. We focused on understanding our students' knowledge and the best ways to help them reach understanding. This course really helped me to understand how to better teach my students. It helped me learn how to change my instruction based on my students' learning needs.

Concepts of Educational Inquiry

We closely studied how people learn in various settings in this course. We also closely studied how education has evolved throughout history. We learned about different structures of learning and teaching. We also learned about the effectiveness of different approaches and styles when teaching. Through evaluations and discussions, we learned how to use inquiry appropriately in our classrooms to be effective teachers.

Awards and Classics of Children's Literature

In this course we studied several different award winning books and evaluated their award-winning qualities. We had various discussions about qualities of books that are worthy of awards. We also discussed and studied possible reasoning for specific books being chosen as winners in the past. We compared award-winning books to each other as well as compared past and present award winners and their runners up. We looked very closely at the novel Peter Pan and compared it to the movie version as we discussed it's award-winning qualities and differences over time.

Elementary Reading Assessment Instruction

We learned about balanced literacy instruction and appropriate assessment techniques in this interesting course. We were able to practice the techniques we were learning on student data. These real world learning assignments helped to solidify our learning in the class. We also participated in class discussions to analyze our assessment data. This course helped me to better understand the results of literacy assessments and how to determine appropriate interventions.

Psychology of Classroom Managment

In this course I learned alot about my students' thinking. I learned how to effectively build relationships with them and manage their behavior. We were able to design our own classroom management plan. The application to the real world and our classrooms helped solidify the knowledge learned in this course. This course required me to analyze my own beliefs about teaching and helped me to create a successful plan for helping my students.

Technology and Leadership

In this course we studied different leadership styles and techniques when dealing with technology. We also learned about effective ways to utilize technology in schools and effectively train staff. We created various assignments where we assumed leadership roles and tackled potential problems in the workplace. Ultimately, this course helped me to realize how to be a successful leader in my school. From this course I have taken away techniques that can utilized to show leadership in my school.

Educating Students with Challenging Behavior

I was able to learn about multiple behavior issues that students have in this course. We were also taught effective strategies for dealing with these behaviors and helping these students be successful. The most effective part of the course was being able to analyze case studies within our groups and decide how we would help that child. There were many strategies I learned in this course that I was able to apply in my classroom. I feel more equipped to deal with difficult behavior effectively because of this course.

Capstone Portfolio Course

This is my final course in completing my degree. This course is uniquely designed. The course allowed us to build a portfolio where we showcased and reflected on our learning and teaching through our coursework. We wrote several essays that helped us anaylze ourselves as educators and learners. We are also discussing our portfolios with our peers and providing constructive feedback to help each other reach success.

Teaching Students Online

In this couse we explored various Course Management Systems and learned how to use them. Eventually, we were able to design our own online learning module. Through this process I learned how to effectively teach my students online. I was also able to learn how to construct an online learning environment. This course taught me many things about web tools and enhancing instruction through online learning.
